Today I learnt...

...that the initial map of the London Underground was "...essentially an overlay of the underground system onto a conventional geographical map of London...", and that later ..."the first abstract, schematic representation, simplifying the curves to just horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines and where the distances between stations were no longer proportional to the geographical distances..." was produced. This abstraction was then used in the maps of the underground railway systems in numerous other countries as well.
This is in an article titled "Is abstraction the key to computing?" in the April 2007 issue of the Communications of the ACM (I think subscription is required to read the article off the ACM digital library).
